The Coin 5 Francs Union & Force - Directoire.

This 5 franc silver shield coin, bearing the inscription "Union et Force", was minted under the Directoire regime (1795-1799).

The Directoire was a political system of the First French Republic. Its name derives from the group of five Directors, who shared executive power and supervised ministers to prevent any tyrannical concentration of power. Their headquarters were located in the Luxembourg Palace.

This regime, introduced at the end of the Terror by the moderate republicans of the Thermidorian Convention, relied on a bourgeoisie enriched by speculation in national property and assignats. Censal suffrage was re-established, enabling the election of two legislative chambers: the Conseil des Cinq-Cents and the Conseil des Anciens.

This coin is the first ecu designed in the decimal system, equivalent to 5 livres, 1 sol and 3 deniers, according to the law of 25 germinal an IV (April 14, 1796). The same decree also provided for the creation of 1 and 2 franc coins, which could not be produced due to lack of material.

The edge bears the engraved inscription: "GARANTIE NATIONALE".
