The Patina of a Piece

A coin patina is a term used in numismatics to designate a characteristic of a coin.

What is the patina of a piece?

Defining the patina of a piece

This is a reaction on the surface of parts under the action of oxygen and chemical particles present in the air.

Chemically, it's an oxidation that takes on different colors depending on the impurities it contains.

It's always best not to touch the patina, and to store your pieces in a neutral place and in contact with neutral materials.

When the patina is too strong, it becomes a veritable oxide layer (black for silver and green for copper) which is very damaging to the original surface of the piece.
