Test bulletin: Selling bullion with or without a Certificate of Authenticity

Test Drive Newsletter, Sell Gold Bar

What is a test bulletin?

The assay bulletin (or certificate) is a document that accompanies 1 kilo gold bars, and has been mandatory since February 2, 1948. Once we've assimilated the information concerning the gold bar certificate, we'll see how it's possible to sell a gold bar without a certificate.

With Abacor, you can sell a gold bar without a certificate at the same price as if it came with a certificate.

Newsletter information

Le bulletin d’essai est une véritable « carte d’identité » du lingot sur lequel sont les informations suivantes :

  1. The gold bar 's serial number (which must match the number on the ingot)
  2. Gold content (in grams per kg, which must be equal to or greater than 995 thousandths)
  3. Gross weight in grams
  4. The weight of fine gold in grams contained in the ingot (This weight is obtained by multiplying the titre by the gross weight, which must be between 995 and 1005 grams).
  5. The name of the foundry (which must be approved by the French warranty office and recognized on international markets)
  6. The tester's signature
  7. Test date

Gold Bar information

Some of the information is also engraved, marked or stamped by the assayer on the ingot itself:

  1. The ingot number, which is also the test number
  2. Gold stock (between 995.0 and 999.9)
  3. The foundry brand
  4. The tester's hallmark

Selling bullion with certificate

All gold bars are supposed to be accompanied by a certificate. Resale is made easier because all characteristics are recorded and guaranteed by the smelter or assayer who signs the certificate.

Selling gold bullion without a certificate

Sometimes the certificates or assay bulletins that normally accompany gold bars are lost, damaged or illegible due to humidity. It is possible to sell a gold bar without a certificate, and this does not change the value of your ingot.

Indeed, the gold bar is worth its weight in gold. As we have seen, the gold title is engraved directly on the block. Thus, it is possible to know the weight of fine gold contained in the gold bar by weighing it.
Even if the hallmarks are absent or illegible, rare dealers such as Abacor have a spectrometer that enables them to accurately determine the title.

However, a fee is charged if the ingot is sold without a certificate. This fee, which varies between 50 and 100 euros, corresponds to the compulsory issue of a new assay report. The professional must have this issued to guarantee the authenticity, purity and quantity of precious metal contained in the gold bar.

Beware, however, that some gold-buying outlets require the certificate to buy back bullion, while others sharply reduce the buy-back price of your gold bar.
At Abacor, you can sell your gold bar without a certificate at its fair value.
