The Korean won is the name of various currencies used in Korea throughout history.
The South Korean won has been the currency of South Korea since 1962. It replaced the hwan, which was used from 1953 to 1962.
The symbol for South Korea's currency is ₩ or ₩, and is written in hangeul: 원 and in hanja: 圓.
Won is related to the Chinese yuan and Japanese yen, as all three were originally written with the same character 圓, meaning "round".
