Romanian Leu, Romanian Mint

The Romanian leu, or Romanian lei in the plural, which literally means "lion" in French, is Romania's currency unit. The leu is divided into 100 bani (singular: ban), but these have been little used since the currency reform of July 1, 2005. The ISO currency code for the Romanian currency is RON, an acronym for Romanian New Leu.)

Romanian President Traian Băsescu declared in 2014, at the end of his term of office, that the changeover to the euro was only planned for 2018 or 20197. Subsequent governments eventually pushed back the deadline to 2022 at best.
