Icelandic currency: Icelandic krona

The Icelandic krona has been Iceland's official unit of currency since its autonomy from Denmark was established on November 30, 1918.
The subdivision of Iceland's currency was withdrawn in September 2002 by the Prime Minister, who banned comma prices. Aurars are no longer accepted.
In 2008, the Icelandic krona lost 60% of its value against the euro, which has been under strict exchange controls ever since.
Iceland considered adopting the Canadian dollar in 2011, then in 2012 announced its intention to adopt a foreign currency or join the eurozone, which is still not the case today.
Since then, EU membership has been off the table, but to avoid currency fluctuations, the idea of pegging Iceland's currency to a major reserve currency, probably the euro, is regularly mooted.
